US Open 2011: Warped! I mean, wrapped!

By TDB HQ In Archive

This year’s US Open (and you and me) survived an earthquake, Hurricane Irene, Li Na and Petra Kvitova implosions, rain, water bubbles on the court, more rain, some shit scheduling and even more rain just for kicks. Phew. Oh, there were also some record breaking matches from Nadia Petrova, Samantha Stosur, Maria Kirilenko and Samantha Stosur again. Plus, marathons from Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic again. All in 2.5 weeks’ work. Why is tennis, guys?

As I typed those last few sentences, I realized that both the 2011 US Open singles champions were part of the best matches we’ve seen throughout the 2.5 weeks in NYC. Way to earn your prize money, Sam and Nole! I have to talk about money, it’s the US Open.

What impressed me most about Sam’s run to her first Grand Slam title was how clear her mind seemed of what she needed to do throughout all those marathon matches and the finals. She executed her game perfectly and did not panic in tight situations or when she was down.

During Sam’s marathon matches, I kept saying to everyone and to no one, “She couldn’t have played a more perfect shot!” Over and over and over again. It happened a lot in the finals along with, “Oooooooh! My. God. What is that forehand?” Her weaker backhand held up well, too, especially her slices which troubled Serena quite a bit.

Man, it was awesome to watch Sam finally rise to the occasion. And to watch her give a proper eff off to the USTA after treating her (and Kirilenko and Kerber) like shit. Doin’ it right, Sammy!

What more can I say about Nole that has not been said yet? All the superlatives are tired so…

I mean, I have to use superlatives because if not then…

Yup. Congratulations on an absolutely amazing year, Novak Djokovic! You are just crazy good at the moment. I hope you got pissed drunk last night, you deserve it!
