After two grueling weeks of dirt ballers getting down and dirty in the red clay, we finally come to a suiting conclusion of the 2nd grand slam event of the year.
Ana Ivanovic finally won her first grand slam title after 3 tries and it was well deserved. She was able to stop a surging Dinara Safina who beat the likes of Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova on red clay in the last 4 weeks. Ana is also the new number 1 player in women’s tennis in the world overtaking Maria Sharapova who dropped some points after failing to reach the SF of the French Open while Ana gained a heap load for going all the way. Congratulations to Ana and best of luck in the upcoming grass season (she needs it ;-))! And please don’t try climbing the stands in a tennis dress ever again.
On the men’s side of the tournament, Rafael Nadal stayed perfect in Paris and won his 4th consecutive title matching Bjorn Borg’s record of consecutive titles won at the French Open. Rafa did it in emphatic form by not dropping a set (ala Maria Sharapova in this year’s Australian Open) and handing Roger Federer, during the finals, his first bagel since 1999. Vamos Rafa!
And that’s a wrap for this years French Open! Until next year my dear dirt ballers. We’re off to see some sexy grass.
